Formal gowns are made from 100% silk in a style correct for 1770-85. The skirt of the gown is pleated to the bodice and the bodice is fully lined. The sleeves end in a double ruffle of either the main fabric of the gown or a contrasting fabric, such as a white ruffle. The skirt of the gown has ties so that it can be pulled up into the polonaise style. I use pins as the front closure of my gowns, which allows for some adjustment in the fit.
When I make a silk gown, I make a petticoat, usually of a contrasting, but complementing, color and design, to go with it. These petticoats “belong” to the gown and I will give the buyer first choice as to whether they would like to keep this petticoat paired with their gown, or if they would prefer a different color.
